Index Manager log reports "HTTP AddURL Failed"

Applies to:Index Manager versions 7.0 and 8.0

Problem

The Index Manager running on Windows Server 2008 or 2012 reports Http AddUrl Failed" in the Operations Center log.
Clients connecting to the server cannot extract a list of available indexes.

Possible causes

  1. The process account does not have built-in administrator privileges. This only applies to Index Manager 7.0.
  2. The index name contains invalid characters.

Solution for cause 1

Change the local security policy to allow all administrators on the server to run without Admin Approval mode.

Note: Index Manager 8.0 can run with Admin approval mode enabled; the default Windows setting. The change to the local security policy described in this article refers only to Index Manager 7.0.

Although the process account used by Index Manager is a member of the local Administrators group on the server, Windows Server 2008 distinguishes between the built-in administrator account and users that are subsequently added to the Administrators group. Any operations performed in the context of these users will have to be approved, which can cause problems for Index Manager.

To change this setting:

  1. Click on Start | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.

  2. Expand Local Policies and click on Security Options.

  3. Locate the entry called User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval mode and change it to Disabled.

  4. Reboot the server for the changes to take effect.

Solution for cause 2

The index name may not contain any characters that cannot be used in a web URL: Check to see if any of the indexes contain invalid characters in a URL - to be sure, use plain-text characters and no special symbols. Then, save the changes and restart the Index Manager service.
