Fieldsets and Relations

14. March 2025

Elaine Foley

Fieldsets are a group of fields treated as one field e.g a fieldset field "address" with the individual fields street, zip, and city. Relations allow us to link Content Items together and provide context about the relation e.g. linking two images to a document and declaring for one image that it is the hero shot and for the other image that it is the logo, or connecting all images for a 360view of a product. You use the corresponding schema (which groups the fields) in fieldsets and relationship fields. Examples are:

  • Fieldset "address" (fields: street, zip, city)
  • Relationship "Referenced content" (fields: title, media type)

The main benefit is that users only add one metadata field (type fieldset or relationship) and they get a set of fields for strictly structured data input. The fields of this schema are linked in the fields of type relationship or fieldset. Depending on the field settings users (or external applications) can add one or multiple instances to the item.

Create a Fieldset or Relation

  1. Open Schemas
  2. Press + to Create
  3. Select Fieldset and relations
  4. Select Parent, when creating a child Layer.
  5. Provide name and ID
  6. Save

After Creating the Fieldset or Relation

  1. Add fields to the Fieldset and Relation
  2. Open menu List or Layer
  3. Add field of type fieldset or relationship and connect to this schema
  4. Edit Content Items or List Items

Use Cases

Fieldset for the Duration of an Event

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Fieldset "duration" (fields in fieldset schema: start time, end time)

Fieldset for Notes and Todos

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Fieldset "working notes" (fields in fieldset schema: note, related file, completed trigger)

Relationship for Product Views

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Relationship "360view" (fields in the relation schema: view)

Relationship for Indesign Package

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Relationship "Referenced content" (fields in the relation schema: title, media type)

Best practice

  • Add a simple but meaningful Display Pattern for the name pattern (will most likely be improved during the setup, default first field of schema). The other Display Patterns are not in use. You should consider using a - for the other patterns.
  • Fields for Fieldset or Relations require no index settings. The index/search behavior relies on the field settings of the field using this schema.
  • Permission "view for all" cannot be changed for fieldsets.
  • To avoid changes, use Schema Permission Sets.
