Checking out files for local editing
With FotoWeb Desktop, you can check out files from a FotoWeb archive and download them to your local file system. They can then be opened in a locally installed application - for instance, you can edit images in Photoshop and videos in Premiere. FotoWeb Desktop also has built-in functionality for high-resolution image editing and cropping/resizing pictures.

We recommend these alternative solutions:
- Use the Photoshop plugin if you need to check in or check out images in Adobe Photoshop
- Use FotoStation if you want to open and edit assets in other local applications
- Download the original assets, edit in your preferred application, and upload the new version once done.
When you work in FotoWeb, three menu choices relate to FotoWeb Desktop. These are located in the Action bar when you have made a selection.
- Open - This checks the file out of FotoWeb, downloads it to your local machine, and opens it in the local application associated with the file type. Typically, a picture opens in Photoshop or another image editor. Files that are checked out in this way will be stored in a repository on the local machine. By right-clicking the FotoWeb Desktop icon in your system tray (or the Mac dock), you can manage your checked-out files and check them back into FotoWeb after editing.
- Edit - This checks the file out of FotoWeb and downloads it for editing in the FotoWeb Desktop image editor. When the file is saved, it is automatically uploaded to the FotoWeb site and checked back into the archive. For more information about the edit function, see Editing images with the Fotoware plugin.
- Crop - This checks the files out of FotoWeb, downloads them locally, and opens them in the FotoWeb Crop module. When you save the file, it is uploaded to FotoWeb again and checked back in. For more information about the crop function, see Cropping images using the Fotoware plugins.
Note: A command file is downloaded to your browsers when you use these functions. In Microsoft Edge, this file opens automatically and launches the associated application. If you use other browsers, a file with the FWC extension is downloaded. You need to manually click this file to trigger the action. You may be able to set your browser to Always open files of this type to avoid having to do this more than once.
