A picture of Weisshorn from Bishorn in 2019 was shot by our Senior Engineer Marek Sajna. License: CC BY SA.
Weisshorn is a mountain of the Pennine Alps, located between the valleys of Anniviers and Zermatt in the canton of Valais. The search for the release name took longer, as our team votes were equally split between three suggested mountains. The final decision was made by the votes of Matina Hämmerli and Bruno Jehle, the founders of the Picturepark company, who then also invited the whole team to their Maiensäss in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland.

Release details

These are the final release notes.

Breakthrough performance

We significantly improved the User Experience for regular users, editors, and data analysts alike by introducing and changing most UI components.

We also improved the performance, changed the layout to remove unnecessary space, and re-arranged menus and buttons for more efficiency when working with Picturepark. Most notable performance improvements*:

Loading Times: The interface loads 3x faster.

Paging: Browsing from image to image is 1.8x faster.

Metadata Creation & Update: Adding Layers and updating fields is about 2.9x faster.

To achieve such improvements, we changed the rendering and loading of thumbnails in a significant overhaul. We migrated most UI sections from an older Angular JS to the latest Angular version.

You can find videos of the most important UX changes here: https://picturepark.com/preview.

* Performance varies depending on your internet connection and your Picturepark setup. We achieved the listed performance improvements with 260 Mbps uplink.

The (Power) User Interface

The main menu is better organized and grouped into main tasks or areas for specific user roles, such as end-users, editors, and administrators.

Redesigned Content Browser

The main menu navigation has been shortened to only the most important areas. The Content Browser and the search experience have been reworked so you can find what is relevant faster and keep a better overview of where you are: the currently active channel, your search terms and suggestions, and other options.

The reworked menus allow faster execution of tasks, such as changing views, sorting order, or showing/hiding overlays (in the top left, bottom right, and bottom left corners of the thumbnail) with relevant information (configurable).

Collections

Collections have been removed from the main menu and integrated directly into the sidebar of the Content Browser so you can access it any time when working with content. Here you can create, access, modify, or remove your sophisticated personal collections, for example, for projects, tasks, or campaigns.

Shares

The new side-by-side layout for shares gives you a faster overview of share details (recipient, date, description) and your shared content. New overlays on shares in the share browser inform you about contained items, the share type (share, embed), and whether or not the share/embed is expired. Additionally, you can expire a share from the toolbar or the context menu.

Schemas and Access

We grouped all schemas (Lists, Layers, Field Types, Virtual Types) in Schemas. Administrators can add fields, change field settings, update Display Pattern, or change ownership or permissions. The functionality is as it was before. In Access, we grouped managing users, roles, and permission sets. The functionality is as it was before.

We arranged the top navigation to better indicate where you are currently working, such as Files > Image.

Other

Transfers have been removed from the main menu as they caused confusion. However, you can still access import collections from the import notification in the new notification center.

Reworked Notification Center
The settings area remains unchanged in layout and functionality.

In Help, you find links to the manual, your system information for support requests, and other information about software licenses in use. Here we introduced the new side-by-side layout, which is also better suited for mobile views.

Side-by-Side Detail Views

We changed the Detail View from a one-page layout to a side-by-side view with tabs.

This way, you can see the content and the metadata much better all at once. Metadata, permissions, references, and statistics appear on the right side as tabs. Functional buttons, such as Edit, are prominently placed on top of the metadata.

In this view, editing (or controlling) takes the blink of an eye.

  • Metadata: You can update all metadata fields from all layers at once.
  • Metadata: You can see a preview of an image and update its metadata in the same view.
  • Permissions: You can see the permissions while still seeing the content preview.
  • References: You can see all referenced and linked Content Items. You can see Shares or Embeds that contain the content.
  • Statistics (NEW): See downloads, shares, and content embeds.

Shortcuts

Further improvements for editing metadata are the new keyboard shortcuts:

  • Add (Insert): CTRL + I
  • Edit: CTRL + E
  • Save: CTRL + S
  • Paging: ALT + arrow left / arrow right

On Apple devices, use Apple Key instead of CTRL.

Smart Tag Manager

Your Picturepark lists reflect your data model, covering taxonomies, product information, attributes - you name it. Using the tag manager, you can better oversee, inspect, maintain, and optimize your metadata and other information.

Smarter List Editing.

In this new three-column layout, you see the list and its list items. The sidebar is your editing area where you update the selected list item. Moreover, when you search through all lists, you can see the list items and their lists as clickable links.

What should I use lists for?

For tags and keywords.

For smart tags with synonyms, translations, and more details like links to Wikipedia pages.

For products with all product details.

For events and event details.

For campaigns and campaign details.

For licenses and their license agreements (NDA’s).

And much more.

For everything tag - the smart one!

Changes to API & SDKs

With the upcoming Picturepark Release “Weisshorn” (v11.0), we will introduce minor API changes, which you might want to consider reviewing if you are responsible for integration. Please find details here:

https://picturepark.com/apichanges

Please check if the changes will affect your integration and adapt it accordingly if needed. If you use our SDK`s or samples like the Content Portal, we recommend updating to the latest version:

Picturepark.SDK.DotNet

Picturepark.SDK.TypeScript

Picturepark.SDK.Samples (including Content Portal)

Suppose you want to test your changes in advance. In that case, we can provide you with a functionally limited clone running on the latest 11.0 preview code base within our stage environment (free provisioning of such a stage system depends on your subscription plan or partner status).
