Updates are available to all customers covered by a valid agreement.

Upgrading

Fotoware tests upgrading from the previous two On-premises releases to the current release, and we offer support for both the current and last major On-premises releases.

Upgrade process

If you are upgrading from a release before FR19, you need to upgrade version by version. For example, if you are upgrading from FR18 to FR21, you must first upgrade to FR19, then to FR20, and finally to FR21; you cannot upgrade directly from FR18 to FR21. For more information, see Upgrading from Feature Release 19 to Feature Release 20.

Known issue when upgrading to Feature Release 21

FotoWeb Settings application fails to start after upgrading to FR 21

After upgrading to Feature Release 21, the FotoWeb Settings application may fail to start, and the following error message is displayed:

An unexpected error occurred while resolving 'Prism.Regions.SelectorRegionAdapter

To prevent or resolve this issue:

Uninstall Feature Release 20 before installing Feature Release 21

or

Re-run setup.exe, choose the Repair option, and complete the installation wizard.

New and updated functionality

  • The User Management API for Search & Filtering has been modernized and now includes extended functionality for managing users and groups. The User Management and Group Management (already documented as a Beta version on https://api.fotoware.com) has been extended to include additional functionality. There are no breaking changes in this update; all existing integrations will continue to function as before.

  • The User Management API for search and filtering has been modernized and updated.  For more information, see Fotoware API.

  • A new version of the Fotoware Metadata Configuration (MDC) Standalone app, version 8.0.940, has been released. This version supports new metadata fields for Consent Search & Filtering (IDs 328, 329, 332–336) and provides improved support for appearance, particularly for display settings with varying scaling. The app will be bundled with upcoming releases of Index Manager, FotoWeb, Color Factory, and Connect, and it will also be available as a separate installer for customer download.

  •  File display enhancement: File sizes are now displayed in MB and GB instead of KB to make it easier to interpret large file sizes.

  • AND combinations are supported in the extended search dialog. allowing for more precise filtering. Previously, only OR combinations were allowed. For more information, see Fotoware extended search and Extended search (Pro interface).

  • Faster scrolling and thumbnail loading for large archives: Previously, scrolling thousands of assets caused delays and high resource usage. This has now been improved to ensure;
    • Smooth scrolling with minimal gaps, even for archives with 4,000+ assets.
    • Thumbnails load significantly faster.
    • Server CPU and memory usage remain stable during heavy scrolling operations.

Fixed issues

  • When sorting users or groups by Name or Company in the Access list view for an archive, an error was displayed.
  • When unsupported file types (such .bat or .7z) were uploaded, they were mistakenly assigned a random document type (for example, video), resulting in incorrect placeholder icons.
  • A site owner without the Manage users permission received an error when trying to edit groups or delete users.
  • In the Pro interface, a default text was displayed instead of the Manage Activity Logging permission in the list of Administrative permissions for groups.
  • The labels for metadata fields in the Upload dialog were displayed in English, even when a different language was selected.
  • In the Main interface, the metadata displayed for assets in the archive grid did not update after editing unless you reloaded the page.
  • Previously, downloading a TIFF file failed when converting to JPG or other formats using a processing profile. The download and conversion process now works as expected.
  • An issue where fields set to use only taxonomy values were accepting non-taxonomy entries in the advanced tab, while correctly restricting them in other views, has been resolved.
  • Version Control: When you tried to upload a new version of an asset using the same name as the original, an error occurred, and the upload failed. To upload the new version successfully, you had to give it a different name from the original asset.
  • Archive auto search did not find results for search terms containing an apostrophe.
  • When exporting assets, the expected asset preview was not displayed in the Export dialog.
  • When unlinking assets from a consent form, Unlink all only removed the first 25 loaded assets instead of all linked assets.
  • The password reset function could be used to determine whether a user with a given email address exists.
  • Vertical videos were stretched to horizontal when transcoded with FFmpeg version 5 or later.
  • Windows Service Control Manager no longer times out when starting FWBackgroundService.
  • The FotoWeb settings app now shows the correct FotoWeb version number instead of 1.0.0.0, making it easier to verify the installed build (for example, 9.15.500).

Known issues

  • MongoDB connections from  FotoWeb on‑Premises and Index Manager now support TLS encryption and authentication to external MongoDB servers, enabling secure, authenticated setups. For more information, see Enable TLS and authorization for your MongoDB deployment. Currently, this does not behave exactly as intended in some scenarios. This will be resolved in the next release, Feature Release 22.
  • The password reset link remains active even after a successful password change, allowing users to reopen the reset page rather than receive an expiration notice.
  • Delegated permissions in access tokens are not updated when refreshing a token.
  • The MDC default configuration has one instance of Rights Management spelled incorrectly (managment).
  • The FotoWeb Settings app does not accept a MongoDB connection string with authentication.
  • Large file uploads (20–25 GB or more) may fail with an Insufficient storage on destination error if the available disk space is less than three times the file size.
  • Union archives do not show assets when Anonymous guest access is off.
  • In configurations where metadata should be pushed automatically to Fotoweb (Fotoweb and MongoDB installed on the same server as Index Manager, MongoDB listening on the default port 27017), metadata is still not pushed if a connection string is specified but disabled in the Index Manager confguration app (under General > Indexes). As a workaround, you can enable the Push metadata to Fotoweb server option and specify a valid connection string (i.e. mongodb://localhost:27017), or delete the connection string and disable Push metadata to FotoWeb server option.
  • Rescanning indexes on the Fotoware Operations Center app status page causes Index Manager to shut down.
