FotoWeb server - Hardware requirements
Table of Contents
Hardware requirements for FotoWeb vary depending on the number of concurrent users and assets in the system.
This topic provides example configurations and guidance to help you select suitable server hardware.
Hardware requirements: example configurations
| Minimum configuration | Medium configuration | Large configuration |
|---|---|---|
| One server with FotoWeb and Index Manager | One server with FotoWeb and Index Manager | One server with FotoWeb and Index Manager |
| 10K – 400K assets | 100K – 1M assets | 500K – 3M assets |
| 1 – 25 concurrent users | 20 – 100 concurrent users | 20 – 100 concurrent users |
| 8 cores | 12 cores | 12 cores |
| 14 GB RAM | 28 GB RAM | 48 GB RAM |
MongoDB: The recommended hardware configurations above do not change if MongoDB is installed on a separate server. For hardware requirements for the server running MongoDB, refer to the MongoDB documentation for the version used in your environment.
Disk requirements
In addition to the software itself, FotoWeb also stores configuration data, previews, thumbnails, CMS exports, and other operational data on the system drive, in the FotoWare\FotoWeb subfolder under the common application data folder (usually C:\ProgramData\FotoWare\FotoWeb).
Disk space consumption varies depending on how the system is used, such as the number of unique assets browsed per day, the number of CMS exports, and the volume of video files. We recommend starting with at least 40 GB of free disk space, or 20% of the drive capacity. Free disk space should not fall below 10 GB or 10% of the drive capacity.
Disk space required for uploads
The drive containing the destination archive must have free disk space of at least three times the size of the file being uploaded. This requirement applies to uploads of any size.
| Size of file being uploaded | Minimum free disk space required on the destination |
|---|---|
| 100 MB | 300 MB |
| 1 GB | 3 GB |
| 10 GB | 30 GB |
| 50 GB | 150 GB |
Plan for this requirement in addition to the general free disk space recommendation above. The three-times rule applies to each concurrent upload, so additional disk space may be required when several large files are uploaded at the same time.
If the destination does not have sufficient free space, the upload may fail or remain incomplete. Check available space before uploading, particularly when working with large files such as video, layered image formats, or raw camera files.
Large files also increase memory consumption during processing. See Choosing a configuration below.
Choosing a configuration
Use the number of concurrent users on the system and the number of assets in the system to determine the appropriate configuration.
For example, a system with one million assets but only five users will require the values specified for the Medium configuration tier above (the number of assets becomes the guide).
In a system with only 10,000 assets and 75 concurrent users, the number of users is the determining factor, indicating that the Medium configuration is appropriate.
Processing large images can significantly increase memory requirements. As a general guideline, processing a 1 GB image requires 5 GB of available memory in addition to the memory specified in the configurations above.
